Philip Viljoen was born and raised not far from where he now makes wine at Bon Courage outside Robertson. He still joins his parents for a home cooked meal at lunch and considers his mother to be a Master Chef champion. Not only does he dish out complements, he also deserves them. Diner’s Club rewarded Philip for his Noble Late Harvest and he was named Young Winemaker of the Year in 2015. Philip joined another Diners Club Winemaker of the Year, Johan Jordaan, at the Wine Village Wine Club’s May tasting. Johan was full of anecdotes and told many winemaking stories.

For starters there was bubbly. Spier’s Méthode Cap Classique and The Secret sparkling wine. The Secret is the only South African sparkling wine in a crown cap and made of three grape varietals. According to Johan The Secret is a breakfast bubbly and the drier Méthode Cap Classique a lunchtime bubbly.

Next up was the Bon Courage Andre’s Fame Colombard 2016. This wine has won prizes consecutively for the last 10 years. The fruit comes from a single vineyard and delivers tropical notes on the nose. Full bodied, big taste that lasts.

The Wine Village Wine Club members tasted their way through the Creative Block series of Spier’s estate wines. This is their high-end product aimed at depicting the vineyards terroir. This series reflects on the Spier Art Academy’s project that gives aspiring artists access to markets by displaying their work on square blocks for appraisal by an expert. Looking at one block is not always enough but seeing the many pieces of art makes another picture. The thinking behind synergy where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. This thinking follows through in the Spier blends where the individual varietals deliver more when paired with the right partner.

Bon Courage offered a taste of their Chardonnay Presige Cuvee 2016. The audience was warned that after a sip of this they will all belong to the ABCD group – Always Bloody Chardonnay Darling! True words spoken of a ten month oaked Chardonnay selected for its quality and bottled without filtering.

The evening was complete with a short sip of the sweet Bon Courage White Muscadel 2016. This was the perfect end to a great meal or as in the Wine Club’s case…a very entertaining evening.
