Meet the Team
Cathy du Toit
The dynamo of the business with a sharp eye for the successful running of the Wine Village. Humble, frank and loyal, she is the driving force behind the Wine Village. Her passion, determination resourcefulness and ambition has led the whole team to victory. Always cool calm and collected this Namibian born power-house was seduced by Paul’s charms while working at KWV – Kleinplasie almost 4 decades ago. He immediately knew she was his life partner – Cathy took a bit of convincing but after he locked her in a large walk-in-safe (apparently by accident) and came to her rescue, she melted and gave in. To this day they are a power-couple with a solid foundation built on mutual respect and a deep seeded love for their whole family. An avid horse lover Cathy won numerous awards in dressage. She has a profound love of all things equestrian and dreams of one day retiring on a small holding with a few horses. She has an incredible green thumb which has guided her in creating an incredible indigenous forest garden. She loves her children and grandchildren fiercely.
Special power: Her brain that is always busy dreaming and planning.
Ever seen the slip of a studying BCom Tourism – the Wine Village is the perfect platform for her to grow and excel. With a heart of gold this small but dynamic young woman oversees all the deliveries done in and around Hermanus. Learning something new every day about the wine industry she has proven to be an asset to our team.
Special power: Throwing knives
This dedicated team member always greets us with a large smile in the morning. Bearing a tray of coffee and if we are lucky a bran muffin and a kind word for the day. Humble and gentle she keeps the very busy tasting counter in ship-shape condition. The only time I have seen her get restless is when we walk on her mopped floors. She chases the culprits with her mop on a regular basis.
Special power: Killer HotChocolate
Karien du Toit
True love at first sight – Fell head over heels for the youngest of the du Toits, Joh du Toit, then dated in secret before professing their love to Paul and Cathy. She is Wine Village through and through. This dedicated daughter-in-law spends her days behind the scene with Cathy as they juggle the intricate workings of the Wine Village administration. But don’t be fooled by her soft-spoken words – with a degree in psychology she has her hand on the pulse of the shop and keeps us all mentally in tune.
Special power: Managed to rope in and marry a du Toit.
Paul du Toit
Hailing from Harare this expat has had a significant impact on the South African wine industry since 1977. Working at the KWV during this time he met his future partner in wine – Cathy du Toit. Referring to Paul as a dynamic wine personality is missing the mark by far. This larger than life personality, has a very strong and lively personality that impresses people very much. To him, life is a stage and he loves every breath. And in his spare time, which is a rare occurrence, is tend to his Bonsai trees. The Wine Village keeps him very busy, so he can’t get up to too much mischief. He is a sport fanatic and is Involved with every sport and social development project in and around the Overberg, you are more than likely to see him on his bicycle with a megaphone in one hand and barrier tape in the other. He holds an unbeaten world record in Life Saving, he has cooked for world presidents and he has cycled the Cape Epic; this dynamic but humble man is a treasure trove of awe inspiring life achievements. He loves hiking in the bush and birdwatching and has created an unbelievable forest like garden to welcome insects and birds a welcome sanctuary.
Special power: Patience, and when that runs out, understanding.
This micro maniac has been with the Wine Village for 12 years. He is an avid mountain biker; all time prankster and works like a machine. He enjoys interacting with the clients, especially international tourists who speak no English or Afrikaans. He has an uncanny ability to understand the client’s needs and loves to help.
Special power: Cycling to Kleinmond and back for fun.
International man of the Wine Hour. Jaco has been a close family friend for going on 10 years. Visiting us at the store one Sunday he jumped behind the tasting counter to help with a large tour group and he’s still here. We are not sure if he earns a salary or if he just loves the shop so much he just shows up for work every day. Always the first to arrive in the morning and one of the last to leave, Jaco is a formidable companion in wine. His passion and love for wine is contagious. As a qualified chef and baker of note with a golf handicap of 9 he does nothing halfway. Except the day he threw his Callaway’s into the water hazard at the Hermanus Golf Club…but that’s a story for another day.
Special power: Gift of the Gab
Having studied civil engineering in PE – he answered the call of the wild Wine Country 2 years ago. He has become one of our most trusted new wine family members with an unmatched work ethic. He spends his free time playing midfielder for his local soccer club – The Lion Cubs and on weekend he likes to prowl the streets in search of the perfect WalkiTalki (chicken feet done on the open fire).
Special Powers: His battery life is always 100%.
Any questions about wine, the shop or our incredible wine country – this is the man to ask. Having been with the Wine Village from the start he knows more about where what is than anyone at the store. Looking for a hidden gem? This is the man to ask. He can be bribed with the following: KFC Zinger Wings or a large helping of Tiramisu. He has big heart and carries it on his sleeve.
Special power: Infectious smile – (and making KFC disappear).
This wine-boffin has tasted every wine in the shop – yes, I mean every wine. She has blossomed from a timid farm girl into a formidable wine connoisseur. Leading the charge on all that is new and exciting in the wine industry and making sure it is available on the Wine Village shelves. With a diverse and encompassing selection ready for all wine lovers to enjoy, she is always ready to help.
Special Power: Keeping her cool.
AKA Sweetcakes. He has an infectious laugh and shy demeaner, which makes him the clown in the family. Having been with the team for close to 5 years, he has shown both great ambition and initiative. He is on the look-out for a s special girl to share his life with – preferably someone who works at KFC so he can get discount on his Streetwise Two.
Special power: Making the mob believe he is there.
Ulla du Toit
Never shoes – lucky if the hair is brushed and usually carrying around a live snake or spider. She hails from a Goldsmith background of a decade and a half and worked in Cape town most of her life. This jack of all trades assisted in the opening of the Wine Village 20 Years ago – helping to start-up and run the shop during the initial 2 years. Roped back into the family business in 2013, She now does everything from writing for the local paper, running logistics on wine festivals, assist on the taste panel selecting wines for the store, and helping Paul with all the adventure sports in the Overberg.
Special power: Herding Cats
